Here&#8217;s a look back at a 2012 interview.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everyonelovesguitar.com\/2018\/09\/06\/denny-freeman-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denny Freeman Interview \u2013 Vietnam, Stevie Ray &amp; Jimmie Vaughan, 1960\u2019s Music &amp; Culture \u2013 Everyone Loves Guitar<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My intent here is to offer my own memories, based on working with Denny in 1971, in that pivotal year for me.<\/p>\n<p>I think I first met Denny in late 1969, when he, Jimmie Vaughan, and others came to the <a href=\"https:\/\/notes.technologists.com\/notes\/2022\/02\/14\/glimpses-from-the-vulcan-1969-70\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vulcan Gas Company<\/a>. So every Friday and Saturday I&#8217;d cram my bass, amp, and cabinets into the back seat of my &#8217;64 Beetle and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/2305+Longview+St,+Austin,+TX+78705-4665,+USA\/1700+Lakeshore+Dr,+Austin,+TX+78746\/@30.2885859,-97.7744203,4660m\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x8644b57a832cab49:0x7e53bf4073db2eb3!2m2!1d-97.7505297!2d30.2871002!1m5!1m1!1s0x865b35550aba1c3f:0xf8a2572b13bb29c7!2m2!1d-97.7877746!2d30.297704!3e0?entry=ttu&#038;g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTAyMy4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wander<\/a> through West Lake Hills to play with Denny, Chuck and Julie.<sup>*<\/sup> The music made it worth it, as did some of the guests that sat in, including Kenneth Threadgill and Jimmie Vaughan. We got to play for Jane Fonda at a private party and on air on local television. I think I made more money, more consistently, than any other time before or since playing music. But computers were even more engaging to me then, and when my mentor, Prof. Angus Pearson, offered me a teaching assistant position at UT CS department starting January 1972, it was time to leave Mullet.<\/p>\n<p>My last substantive work with Denny was in February 1973 when Jerry Wexler commissioned <a href=\"https:\/\/technologists.com\/60sN70s\/index.html#SouthernFeeling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demo tapes<\/a> of Southern Feeling and I got to be the engineer.<\/p>\n<p>I lost touch with Denny until I re-engaged with him on Facebook some years ago. In December 2018 I went to three of his gigs, at Saxon Pub, C-Boy&#8217;s, and Antones, delighted to hear him play in such different styles. Nobody knew he was ill until he went to ER April 4. A week ago Monday I was stunned to hear he was in hospice, now know he had been there since the 15<sup>th<\/sup>, and now Denny is gone in a period of 21 days.
